How We Use an SI-Bone Device in Our Sacroiliac Joint Fusion Procedures
Up to 1 in 5 adults will experience low back pain at some point. When lower back pain becomes chronic, persisting or recurring for several months or longer, it can interfere with your ability to lead a full and active life.
Sacroiliac joint (SI) fusion is a minimally invasive treatment for stubborn back and buttock pain involving your SI joints. If more conservative care hasn’t resolved your symptoms, it may be your best bet, especially if you wish to avoid major surgery.
Our expert team at Houston Pain Specialists, led by board-certified pain management specialist Hui Kang, MD, performs SI joint fusion procedures using the SI-Bone® device — trusted technology that provides major advantages.

Conditions our SI fusion procedures treat
Sacroiliac joint fusion is a versatile treatment that effectively reduces chronic pain in your lower back. Conditions we treat with SI joint fusion include:
- Degenerative joint disease
- Postpartum pelvic pain
- Sacroiliac joint dysfunction
- SI joint inflammation
- Traumatic SI joint injury
SI joint fusion reduces pain by at least 50% in most cases, leading to better quality of life and less, if any, reliance on pain medication.
How SI joint fusion works
During your sacroiliac joint fusion procedure, we permanently connect your ilium and sacrum bones. This is where the triangular bone at the bottom of your spine meets your upper pelvis.
We place titanium implants through a small incision, guided with imagery for the surgeon’s precision. Fusing these bones does away with instability and abnormal motion in the joints. As a result, the bones won’t lock together, guarding against stress, inflammation, and pain.
In all, SI fusion usually takes about an hour to complete. Most patients return home the same day.
SI-Bone device advantages
The SI-Bone device we use at Houston Pain Specialists was designed to improve patient outcomes and minimize chronic pain.
Key benefits include:
- A significantly less invasive approach to SI joint fusion
- Less recovery time and postoperative pain
- Reduced risk of surgical complications, such as nerve damage
- Proven, study-backed success in treating SI joint dysfunction
Within weeks of the procedure, most of our patients experience notably less pain. SI joint fusion also promotes natural bone healing. Over time, your bone tissue will grow over the implant so they’ll function together as one strong unit.
